This wonderful antique sterling open salt was crafted by renowned London silversmith Hester Bateman. The bowl features a gadroon rim, a dimpled body engraved with the cursive monogram RHR, and stands on three hoofed feet. It is clearly hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant, crowned leopard’s head, a lowercase e in a banner with single point, and Bateman’s HB maker’s mark.

Hester Bateman, often called the “Queen of Silver,” assumed control of her family’s silversmithing workshop in 1760 after her husband’s death. Through her innovative use of workable sheet silver and her keen managerial skill, she transformed the business into one of London’s most successful workshops, continuing until her retirement in 1790.

Measuring approximately 1.25" x 2.5" and weighing about 37 grams, it comes from the collection of a distinguished decorative arts enthusiast who served on the executive board of the Decorative Arts Council at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and as Vice President of the Orange County Ceramic Circle.

Excellent condition. Hester Bateman spoon included.
