Up for your consideration is a gorgeous, late 19th to early 20th-century continental European footed trinket or jewelry box. This piece features incredible, high-relief dimensional scenes that make it a standout addition to any vanity, dressing table, or antique silver collection.
Artistry & Design Motif
The Lid: Features a beautifully detailed 18th-century genre scene depicting travelers on horseback arriving at or departing a gated country inn or estate house.
The Body: Features a rare, continuous embossed narrative of a classic European fox or stag hunt. The high-definition repoussé work showcases hounds in mid-chase, mounted hunters clearing fences, and a richly wooded landscape.
The Construction: Raised on four ornate scrolled feet with a tight, stable rear hinge and an integrated stylized thumbpiece lip for easy opening.
Markings & Provenance
The inner rim of the bezel features early hand-stamped workshop markings:
A prominent stylized Gothic "C" maker's or pattern mark.
Matching "3" assembly/tally stamps on both the lower rim and upper lid rim, indicating a hand-fitted, workshop-crafted piece where the lid was custom-tailored to its base before final hinging.
Condition Report
This box is in honest, authentic antique condition with beautiful structural integrity.
Metalwork: No structural cracks, major dents, or repairs. The high-relief details remain crisp and full of contrast.
Finish/Patina: Features heavy, beautiful "bleeding" where the original silver plate has worn away over decades of polishing to reveal the warm, golden copper/brass base metal underneath. This adds an incredible, authentic two-tone character that cannot be faked.
Interior: The original purple velvet/silk lining remains in the base. The tufted silk lining on the inside of the lid is heavily frayed and shredding due to age (please see photos).
