This elegant Art Nouveau cane, gifted by celebrated actress Anna Held to New York Journal arts journalist William M. Dunlevy, combines exceptional craftsmanship with captivating provenance. Adorned with intricate gilt appliqué over silver, an L-shaped handle, and a sleek wooden shaft, it reflects the refined artistry of the period. Helene Anna Held (1872–1918)—a Polish-born, French-Jewish performer—was one of Broadway’s brightest stars from 1896 to 1910. Discovered by impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, who brought her to America as his common-law wife, she captivated audiences with her Parisian charm and bold stage presence. Her success helped inspire Ziegfeld’s famed Follies and shaped early Broadway culture.

Though her connection to Dunlevy remains only lightly documented, this cane highlights the influential role the press played in shaping Held’s public persona and elevating her to international fame.
