Antique Chinese Porcelain Lidded Tea / Storage Jar – Hand Painted Figures, Calligraphy Poem – Qing / Republic Period

Offered here is an attractive antique Chinese porcelain covered jar dating to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period (circa 1890–1920). The piece features traditional scholar-themed decoration with hand-painted figures and a poetic calligraphy inscription.

The rounded porcelain jar is fitted with its original domed lid and wire bail handles, and measures approximately 7–8 inches in diameter. The decoration is executed in a soft famille-rose palette with landscape elements and figures engaged in a traditional outdoor scene.

One side displays a carefully painted scholar scene set in nature, while the opposite side features vertical Chinese calligraphy rendered in classical brush style. The inscription reflects a traditional poetic theme celebrating nature and the cultured life of scholars.

Translation of the inscription (approximate):

“Peach blossoms enter the wine.

Mountains and rivers form a beautiful scene.

In the winter of the Jiazi year,

by the river the spring arrives in harmony.”

This type of inscription was commonly used on scholar-themed porcelain to evoke the refined Chinese tradition of poetry, nature, and leisure among learned men.

The underside retains a seal mark in iron-red enamel, a style frequently used on decorative porcelains produced during the late Qing and early Republic era. The foot rim shows the typical kiln grit and firing characteristics associated with period porcelain.

Condition

Good antique condition overall. Typical minor firing specks and light age wear consistent with period production. The lid appears original to the jar. No obvious major cracks noted.

Measurements

Approx. 7–8 inches diameter (see photos with measuring tape).

A very appealing example of traditional Chinese scholar-style porcelain—combining figural decoration, poetry, and classic form.
